There were eleven yards between them, and Thomas Malling stared at her without blinking, while his eyebrows pulled together into a question mark over the bridge of his nose.

Heloise slowly raised her hand in greeting. Then one corner of her mouth curled upward into a careful smile.

Thomas started walking toward her, stopping only when they were face to face. His gaze glided over her face as if he was having a hard time taking it all in.

“Hi,” Heloise said nervously. Her heart was beating so hard she was afraid he could hear it.

Thomas said nothing, and Heloise had a hard time decoding his facial expression.

“I’m sorry for showing up at your house yesterday, but …”

He put his arms around her and pulled her to him before she could say anything more. Heloise returned his embrace as the memories exploded inside her. His breath felt warm through her hair, and he smelled familiar. Secure.

“I thought I was hallucinating yesterday,” he said, holding her in front of him with outstretched arms to examine her more closely. His eyes roved over her face.

Then he cracked a smile.

“Is it really you?”

Heloise smiled and nodded.

He squeezed his eyes shut and shook his head wordlessly.

“But what … what on earth are you doing here?”

Heloise met his gaze and at that moment couldn’t remember what it was that had brought her here.

She couldn’t remember anything but Thomas.
